Of Lancaster, NY, July 14, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Jeannette (Wierzbicki); loving father of Joseph Anna), Thomas (Linda), Daniel, Paul (Patricia), John (Maria), Ret. Major Mary Burakowski, Michael, Alyssa (Ben) Vacranae-Guglielmi, Mark (Michelle) and the late Helen Kryszak; grandfather of 15, great-grandfather of 11; brother of Theresa (late Jim) Quinn; also predeceased by other brothers and sisters and survived by nieces and nephews. Family will receive relatives and friends at the WENDEL & LOECHER, INC., FUNERAL HOME, 27 Aurora St., Lancaster, Monday July 26, from 3-7 PM, with a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption RC Church, Lancaster, Tuesday, July 27, at 9:30 AM. Bruce A. BenKinney, 91, of Berwick, died Wednesday, July 21, 2021, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.



Born April 15, 1930, in Allentown, he was the son of the late Lawrence BenKinney and Stella Fahringer Smith.


He was graduate of Allentown Central High School, Class of 1948. That same year, at the age of 19, he went on to serve in the U.S. Army in the 7th Calvary during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of sergeant. On September 13, 2020, he was presented with the Quilt of Valor in recognition of his service.


He received the Japanese Occupation Medal, the Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Campaign Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, three Battle Stars, the Bronze Star with "V" Device, two Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantry Badge.


He was employed as a production engineer at N.J. Zinc, U.S. Gauge and most recently, Merck, from which he retired.


Mr. BenKinney was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Berwick. He was a freemason and a member of the American Legion, Post 945.


An avid outdoorsman, Bruce enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and reading.


Preceding him in death were his wife of 57 years, Arlene BenKinney, on Oct. 17, 2010; his son, Thomas BenKinney; and his brother, Leon BenKinney.


Surviving are his son, Dr. James A. BenKinney and his wife, Michele, Berwick; two daughters, Susan, wife of Frank Schwab, Towanda, and Marie BenKinney, wife of Larry MacPherson, Tomball, Texas; his grandson, Jacob BenKinney; his brother, Forrest BenKinney, Raleigh, N.C.; and his cat, Henry.


A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1600 Fowler Ave., Berwick, with the Rev. Chad Hebrink of Grace Lutheran Church officiating.


Following the service, there will be a luncheon at the church. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to service time.


Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.


Donations can be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at the above address, or to the Hope Center, 650 Harter Ave., Nescopeck, PA 18635.
